These are a few of the various fascinating books and papers which helped inspired my presentation at this weekend\u2019s virtual Creatrix Studies 2026 Conference, hosted by Mago Academy. Enjoy!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"shrinkToFit alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.magoacademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/she-conf-logo.jpg?w=1500&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.magoacademy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/she-conf-logo.jpg?w=1500&amp;ssl=1\" width=\"492\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Inanna<\/h2>\n<p>For more on Inanna, as well as beautiful translations of \u201cThe Descent of Inanna\u201d and other hymns by Enheduanna, the first named author of record, I recommend any of three books:<\/p>\n<p><em>Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth: Her Stories and Hymns from Sumer<\/em> by Samuel Noah Kramer and Diane Wolkstein. Kramer was one of the world&#8217;s leading Assyriologists when he and Wolkstein wrote this book, while Wolkstein was a noted folklorist and storyteller<\/p>\n<p><em>Princess, Priestess, Poet: The Sumerian Temple Hymns of Enheduanna<\/em> by Jungian analyst Betty De Shong Meador<\/p>\n<p><em>Inanna, Lady of Largest Heart: Poems of the Sumerian High Priestess<\/em> by Betty De Shong Meador and internationally renowned queer feminist poet Dr. Judy Grahn<\/p>\n<h2>The Heroine\u2019s Journey<\/h2>\n<p>I spent years trying to find a book on the Heroine\u2019s Path\/Journey that wasn\u2019t just a gender-flipped version of Campbell\u2019s faulty \u201cmonomyth,\u201d or so-called \u201cHero\u2019s Journey.\u201d After four or five disappointing books I\u2019d given up \u2013 when I stumbled across the following author, whom I wholeheartedly recommend. I\u2019m currently in the process, in fact, of reading as much of her work as I can get my hands on! :)<\/p>\n<p>Jody Gentian Bower&#8217;s article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismythology.com\/post\/we-don-t-need-another-hero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We Don\u2019t Need Another Hero<\/a>,\u201d and her book <em>Jane Eyre\u2019s Sisters: How Women Live and Write the Heroine Story.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Descent, the Shadow, and Jung<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m not a Jungian, and I\u2019m wary of Jung\u2019s unrecognized misogyny, so I\u2019m just sharing the interesting book which introduced me to Jung: <em>Man and His Symbols<\/em>. Consequently, since I can&#8217;t recommend anything in particular if you&#8217;re interested in shadow work, may I suggest you try a woman author? It may well offer you an interestingly different perspective.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in shadow work, I\u2019ve had this book repeatedly recommended to me, and it\u2019s on my \u2018to read\u2019 list: Betty De Shong Meador\u2019s <em>Uncursing the Dark: Treasures from the Underworld<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all I have for now; it was just a 13 minute presentation so I had to talk very concisely.
