Having a lovely time at my first MythCon — and perhaps next year I can attend physically instead of virtually! Tomorrow I’m making a zoom presentation titled “Today\u2019s Christianity: Are We in the Mirror Universe? A Comparison of the <\/em>Gospel of Mary and Petrine Christianity via the Heroine\u2019s Journey<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

Also, I’ve promised to post other stuff on my blog as well, like some classes I’ll be giving soon — yay! But for now, I’ve got some of the presentation’s references listed just below. Apologies, but it may take me a few days to remember if I’ve forgotten anything. Still, for now: enjoy! :)<\/p>\n

The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle<\/em> by Karen L. King — This is the translation I predominantly used; nice and clear and with a bit of historical perspective to add context. Added bennie: photos of the actual papyrus pages! Very cool.<\/p>\n

The Gospels of Mary: The Secret Tradition of Mary Magdalene, the Companion of Jesus<\/em> by Marvin W. Meyer and Esther A. De Boer — I used this as a sort of back-up and clarification to anything in King’s book that left me bemused. It offers a slightly more spiritual perspective too, which is nice.<\/p>\n

“Collyridian D\u00e9j\u00e0 Vu: The Trajectory of Redaction of the Markers of Mary\u2019s Liturgical Leadership<\/a>“<\/em> by Ally Kateusz — This paper got me started on my interest in Mary Magdalen! Dr. Kateusz’ work predominantly covers how Mary, Jesus’ mother, was historically depreciated, but she also applies her research (concerning the concerted cultural campaign to cheapen and degrade women) to Mary Magdalen as well. Heck, her whole website is engrossing — enjoy!<\/p>\n

The Mary Magdalene Cover-Up: The Sources Behind the Myth<\/em> by Esther A. de Boer — still working through this one! Deeply engrossing, due to her taking a sort of meta-view of the times to show how and why Peter was able to effectively drown out Mary despite everyone of that time knowing he was a poor interpreter of Jesus’ teachings.<\/p>\n

Jane Eyre’s Sisters: How Women Live and Write the Heroine’s Story<\/em> and\u00a0“We Don’t Need Another Hero<\/a>” by Jody Gentian Bower —\u00a0If the Heroine’s Journey interests you at all, I strongly<\/em> recommend Bower’s works! She didn’t just make up a female version of Campbell’s work. Instead she analyzed how women themselves, throughout history, wrote about heroic women — and then she developed her theory from that. Fascinating!<\/p>\n

For bible-related research I highly recommend bible scholar Dan McClellan’s youtube channel<\/a> — he’s sharp as a tack, he’s extremely conversant with the original languages, and he explains clearly for a lay audience. Alternately, he and atheist Daniel Beecher also have an excellent podcast: Data Over Dogma<\/a>.<\/p>\n
